Here are seven news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for Dec. 23, 2013.

Proposed legislation would create new Medicare bundled payment plan.

Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.) proposed legislation that would expand bundled payments within the Medicare program. The Comprehensive Care Payment Innovation would create a voluntary bundled payment model, building off of the currently in effect Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative.

Illinois legislative committee rules against CON law changes again.
The Illinois Legislative Joint Commission on Administrative Rules once again ruled in support of its prohibition against certificate of need changes in the state, which would require ASCs to seek CON approval before adding a new surgical specialty.

Fremont Area Medical Center to acquire Fremont Surgical Center.
Fremont (Neb.) Area Medical Center announced it intends to complete the acquisition of Fremont Surgical Center in February.

Specialty Surgical Center to undergo Armstrong Institute patient safety training.
Specialty Surgical Center, based in Sparta, N.J., will become the first surgical center to undergo training conducted by the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Ohio Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers names Cheryl Cunningham chair.
The Ohio Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers selected Cheryl Cunningham, RN, as chair of the association for a two-year period. Ms. Cunningham is the administrator of the Findlay Surgery Center.  

Dr. Joe Morris of Pierce Same Day Surgery featured in article on pain medication use.
Joe Morris, MD, a general surgeon of Pierce Street Same Day Surgery in Sioux City, Iowa, was recently featured in a Sioux City Journal article. Dr. Morris discussed the use of Exparel pain medication in the article.

Preston Crossing Endoscopy Center to hold free colon cancer screening day.
Preston Crossing Endoscopy Center, an AmSurg facility, will hold a free colon cancer screening day for uninsured patients on Jan. 25, 2014.
