Here are seven news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for Dec. 2, 2013.

California Governor signs bill updating ASC adverse events reporting requirements.
California Governor Jerry Brown recently signed a bill into law updating ambulatory surgery center adverse event reporting requirements. Accredited outpatient facilities are now required to report adverse events to the Medical Board of California within five days of the event begin detected. An ongoing urgent event must be reported within 24 hours.

Cataract surgery results in $123.4B in savings.
A recent study published in the American Academy of Ophthalmology journal Ophthalmology has found that cataract surgeries performed over the period of one year generate $123.4 billion in societal savings over 13 years.

Specialty Surgery Center executive director earns FACHE.
Phillip Santillanes, FACHE, the executive director of Specialty Surgery Center in San Antonio, recently became a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Mr. Santillanes has more than 17 years of experience in the healthcare industry, working in clinical and administrative leadership roles.

Dr. Bamdad Farhad joins Southeastern Surgical Center.
Bamdad Farhad, DO, a general and bariatric surgeon, has joined Southeastern Surgical Center in Lumberton, N.C. Southeastern Surgical Center offers minimally invasive surgery for adults and pediatric patients.

Legislators consider three-year exemption from HITECH Act for ASCs.
The Electronic Health Records Improvement Act, H.R. 13331, includes a three-year HITECH Act exemption for ambulatory surgery centers. The bill would allow additional time for the development of ASC-specific standards for EHR and HITECH Act compliance.

ASC nurse fatally stabbed at work.
Gail Sandidge, a nurse at Good Shepherd Ambulatory Surgical Center in Longview, Texas, was fatally stabbed while working at the ASC. The alleged assailant assaulted staff and visitors, injuring four people and killing Ms. Sandidge. The ASC is a freestanding center connected to Good Shepherd Medical Center by a skybridge.

HHS: HealthCare.gov repairs to meet Nov. 30 deadline.
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has told state and local officials that the Obama administration is on schedule to meet the Nov. 30 deadline for fixing HealthCare.gov errors.
