Here are seven news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for April 7, 2014.

ASCA 2014 Q1 benchmarking program open.
The Ambulatory Surgery Center Association announced its ASC Benchmarking Program is now open for the first quarter of 2014 data collection period. The Q1 collection period closes April 30.

CMS to release physician payment information.
No earlier than April 9, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will release data on the number and type of healthcare services provided by individual physicians and how much Medicare paid them in 2012. April 15 cutoff for PPACA enrollment extension.
The Obama administration announced that individuals who attempted to sign up for healthcare coverage before the open enrollment deadline on March 31, but could not complete the process now have until April 15 to finish signing up.

Saint Vincent Surgery Center adds iStent for glaucoma treatment.
Robert Haverly, MD, of Saint Vincent Surgery Center in Erie, Pa., added the iStent into his practice for glaucoma treatment. The iStent was the smallest medical implant ever when it received FDA clearance in 2012.

Tom Tassone named AAAHC director of health plans.
The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care appointed Tom Tassone as director of health plans. In this role, Mr. Tassone is responsible for expanding Qualified Health Plans accreditation.

Ophthalmology device market to reach $9.5B by 2018.
The global market for ophthalmology devices is expected to reach a value of $9.47 billion by 2018. The expected market growth is largely due to an aging population and an increased rate of eye disease.

AMA opposes SGR patch.
The American Medical Association has expressed disapproval of the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014, which was signed into law by President Barack Obama last week. Though the AMA has opposed the ICD-10 transition, it does not believe that a one-year extension is worth the price of another SGR patch. The organization does recognize that the extra time to prepare for the code set switch is welcome.
