Barclays analyst bullish on outpatient surgery centers
Barclays' Joshua Raskin recently reported more sick patients are headed to outpatient facilities instead of hospitals, which he described as one of the biggest trends in healthcare since Medicare and Medicaid were created. He expects the trend to keep accelerating.

Fire! ASC recovering after damage
Hartford County Ambulatory Surgery Center in Maryland experienced a fire last week that began from an electrical failure in a bathroom ceiling fan. The center expects $10,000 in damages, but was able to squelch the fire.

Hospital in trouble with surgery center?
The Lawrence County Memorial Hospital is asking the community to pitch in and help pay off more than $400,000 left in debt after building a new surgery center. A large portion of the initial money for the surgery center also came from personal donors.

Foundation HealthCare surgical hospitals exceed expectations
Two surgical hospitals in Texas managed by Foundation HealthCare reported better-than-expected last quarters. The surgical hospital in El Paso is expecting to exceed predicted fourth quarter EBITDA and the surgical hospital in San Antonio increased surgical volumes.

MedStar's ASC on the move
MedStar Health is building a new campus and plans to move the MedStar Surgery Center to the new location. The lease is for an 112,000-square-foot ambulatory campus that will bring primary care physicians together with specialists.

PPACA 30-hour work week challenged, but still intact
An attempt to strike down the mandate for businesses to provide healthcare to employees who work 30 hours per week was approved in the House of Representatives. The bill is on its way to the Senate and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says it will see a vote, but the White House plans to veto the bill.

Urgent care sets up shop in retail
According to a new Bloomberg Businessweek report, walk-in medical clinics are setting up shop in shopping malls. The article cited 9,400 new clinics between 2009 and 2013, and around one-third were in abandoned shopping malls.
