Institute of Medicine report suggests Medicare spending gaps are due to waste.
The IOM report "Geographic Variation in Health Care Spending and Promotion of High-Value Care – Interim Report" analyzed three decades of research and found disparities in Medicare spending that couldn't be accredited to patients' health status and age. Unnecessary spending and services could be the cause.
PPACA generates 111M hours of paperwork.
A study done by the American Action Forum has found that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has created 111.4 million hours of paperwork. The AAF estimated that it would take 55,742 employees working 2,000 hours per year to complete the paperwork.
OIG issues fraud alert on physician-owned distributorships.
The HHS Office of Inspector General has issued a special fraud alert centered on specific elements of physician-owned distributorships. The OIG has named eight "suspect characteristics" of physician-owned entities.
Kaleida Health plans Buffalo ASC.
Kaleida Health plans to lease 20 percent of the Buffalo (N.Y.) Niagara Medical Campus and open an ambulatory surgery center in that space.
Raleigh Orthopaedic Surgery Center opens.
Rex Healthcare and Raleigh (N.C-based) Orthopaedic Clinic have announced the opening of the joint venture Raleigh Orthopaedic Surgery Center. The 27,707-square-foot center will offer outpatient, orthopedic services.
Helena SurgiCenter appoints Heather Lambott clinical director.
Helena (Mont.) SurgiCenter, a multispecialty ASC, has named Heather Lambott as its new clinical director.
AAOS approves first appropriate use criteria.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has approved its first appropriate use criteria, which concentrates on the treatment of distal radius fractures. This AUC covers 10 treatments and 216 common patient scenarios.
