5 things for healthcare leaders to know about hacking

With the massive Anthem hack clear in the collective memory of the healthcare industry, it is important that healthcare leaders understand the cybersecurity issue and take steps to protect their organizations, according to a Health Data Management report:

Here are five things for healthcare leaders to know about hacking and cybersecurity:

1. The HHS Office for Civil Rights' "Wall of Shame" website lists more than 1,000 major breaches since late 2009.

2. Big hacks have affected a total of more than 8.1 million individuals.

3. Hospitals and physician practices are a growing target because cyber criminals now know that health data is more comprehensive than financial data and it offers better opportunities for identity theft and fraud.

4. Cybersecurity has been recognized as a patient safety issue by patient safety organization ECRI Institute in 2014.

5. Top healthcare leaders need to be informed as well as engage resources to counter the threat of a data hack.
