Although some hospitals and other healthcare organizations scaled back overall physician recruiting efforts during the recession and now slow economic recovery, there are several high-demand specialties that attracted higher average income offers last year, according to the Merritt Hawkins "2012 Review of Physician Recruiting Incentives."Merritt Hawkins' most recent report covers the salaries, bonuses and other incentives usually used to recruit physicians. Here are the five specialties that showed the greatest salary gains year-over-year. (Note: Salary figures represent the average income offer.)
Otolaryngology
2010-2011: $359,000
2011-2012: $412,000
Difference: 15 percent
Endocrinology
2010-2011: $218,000
2011-2012: $248,000
Difference: 11 percent
Dermatology
2010-2011: $331,000
2011-2012: $364,000
Difference: 10 percent
Neurology
2010-2011: $256,000
2011-2012: $280,000
Difference: 9 percent
Family practice
2010-2011: $178,000
2011-2012: $189,000
Difference: 6 percent
