The following observations are from discussions at a two-day health IT summit in San Francisco:

1. Molly Coye, MD, chief innovation officer of UCLA Health in Los Angeles, noted that healthcare may not be moving quickly enough to keep pace with the sudden rise of digital health startups and retail health.

2. David Kaelber, MD, chief medical information officer, of Cleveland-based MetroHealth, said that the healthcare industry won't fully grasp the potential of data analytics until the year 2040.

3. Jonathan Palma, MD, Medical Director, Clinical Informatics/Analytics, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., said that one of the responsibilities of IT leaders moving forward is changing the culture around the use of data and "facilitate a data-driven culture."
