Here are the top ten most commonly performed ambulatory surgeries in hospitals, according to 2003 statistics from 17 selected states. Total number of ambulatory surgeries performed (rounded to the nearest thousands) for each procedure is provided, with the procedure's percentage of overall ambulatory surgeries in parentheses.

  1. Lens and cataract procedures — 431,000 (8.7 percent)
  2. Other therapeutic procedures on muscles and tendons — 246,000 (5 percent)
  3. Tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy — 186,000 (3.8 percent)
  4. Other O.R. therapeutic procedures on joints — 166,000 (3.4 percent)
  5. Excision of semilunar cartilage of knee — 159,000 (3.2 percent)
  6. Inguinal and femoral hernia repair — 153,000 (3.1 percent)
  7. Cholecystectomy and common duct exploration — 152,000 (3.1 percent)   
  8. Lumpectomy, quadrantectomy of breast — 151,000 (3.1 percent)   
  9. Myringotomy (ear tube surgery) — 149,000 (3 percent)   
  10. Diagnostic dilatation and curettage (D&C) — 142,000 (2.9 percent)
