Total joints in action: 20 ASCs offering total knee replacement

Here are 20 ambulatory surgery centers that provide total knee replacement procedures.

Ambulatory Surgical Center of Stevens Point (Wis.). The Ambulatory Surgical Center of Stevens Point offers total knee replacement procedures, and it is a freestanding, independent surgical center, which opened in August 2006. It specializes in same day procedures in a wide array of specialties, including general surgery, orthopedics, podiatry, ophthalmology and urology. The facility includes two operating rooms and is staffed by 16 physicians.

Blue Ridge Surgery Center (Raleigh, N.C.). The ASC provides both total knee replacement procedures and total shoulder replacements. The center is affiliated with SCA and incudes six operating rooms with a minor procedure room. Established in 1985, the 13,000-square-foot center also offers surgical care in ENT, pain management, podiatry, spine surgery, urology and general surgery.

Brookside Surgery Center (Battle Creek, Mich.). In September 2014, the surgery center became the first ASC in Michigan to perform total knee replacement surgery. Joseph Burkhardt, DO, orthopedic surgeon and physician partner at the center, performed the procedure. This marks the first phase of the launch of the ASC's total joint replacement program. Plans to include total hip and total shoulder replacements are the works.

The 11,540-square-foot ASC was opened in 1997. It features three operating rooms and two procedure rooms. It is managed by Meridian Surgical Partners and offers surgical services in numerous specialties, including gastroenterology, gynecology, hand surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, orthopedics and pain management.

Campbell Clinic Surgery Center (Germantown, Tenn., and Midtown, Tenn.). There are two ASCs affiliated with Campbell Clinic, and both offer outpatient total knee replacement procedures. The ASCs are a part of Campbell Clinic which provides the full spectrum of musculoskeletal care, including sports medicine services. Physicians at Campbell Clinic serve as team physicians and official sports medicine providers for the Memphis Grizzlies and Memphis Redbirds.

Carrillo Surgery Center (Santa Barbara, Calif.). Physicians at the Carrillo Surgery Center perform procedures in a number of specialties, including anesthesiology, pain management and orthopedic surgery, including total knee replacement procedures. The center, which includes two operating rooms, has been opened since November 2005. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and Medicare-certified.

Charlotte (N.C.) Surgery Center. The SCA-affiliated surgery center offers total knee replacement procedures as well as surgical services in gynecology, ophthalmology, podiatry, urology, plastic surgery and pain management. Opened in 1984, the surgery center includes seven operating rooms and a procedure room. The center is accredited by The Joint Commission.

Creekside Surgery Center (Anchorage, Alaska). The surgery center has a total joint program that began in December 2011, according to Sue Sumpter, administrator of the center. "We have completed over 280 total hips and total knees," she says. "Proper patient selection is the key for this program's success as well as very involved surgeons and medical director."

Established in 2010, the surgery center provides services for orthopedic, ENT, podiatry, pain management and spine procedures. It is a joint venture between local surgeons and Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services. A total of 16 physicians have a financial interest in the facility.

Fayetteville Ambulatory Surgery Center (Fayetteville, N.C.). The surgery center offers numerous procedures, including total knee replacements. It also offers surgical services in gastroenterology, gynecology, pain management, podiatry, urology, ophthalmology and neurosurgery. Opened in 1982, the surgery center features 11 operating rooms, three procedure rooms and an overnight recovery care center. It is accredited by The Joint Commission and backed by SCA.

High Pointe Surgery Center (Lake Elmo, Minn.). High Pointe Surgery Center offers treatments in various specialties, including ophthalmology, gynecology, urology, pain management and orthopedics. Within orthopedic surgery, the center offers knee arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction, unicompartmental knee replacement and total knee replacement procedures. The center is staffed by more than 15 orthopedic surgeons.

Loveland (Colo.) Surgery Center. The surgery center offers total knee replacement procedures. The surgery center includes three operating rooms and first and second stage recovery rooms. Physicians at the ASC offer surgical services in orthopedics, ENT and pain management. There is a Convalescent Center next door to the center that offers extended recovery stays. David Ornelas, CASC, is the center's administrator.

Manitowoc (Wis.) Surgical Center. Manitowoc Surgical Center offers total knee replacement surgery as well as total hip replacement surgery and total shoulder replacement surgery. Staffed by four orthopedic surgeons, the center has been responsible for more than 25,000 surgeries. The center is recognized by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and is certified for 23-hour stays for the convenience and comfort of those undergoing joint replacement.

Mercy Clinic Orthopedics Surgery Center (Springfield, Mo.). Mercy Clinic Orthopedics Surgery Center offers a number of orthopedic services for complex spine, hand surgery and knee injuries. Its services also include minimally invasive options for total hip and knee replacement. The center is staffed by 16 physicians.

Mississippi Valley Surgery Center & Endoscopy Center (Davenport, Iowa). The surgery center offers a wide array of procedures including total hip and total knee replacements. Additionally, it offers care in ENT, gastroenterology, gynecology, general surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, and spine. The surgery center was opened in 1996 and the endoscopy center was opened in 2004. The facilities currently perform 9,000 procedures a year and employ approximately 110 staff members. Mississippi Valley Surgery Center & Endoscopy Center are accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and affiliated with Surgical Care Affiliates.

Northeast Missouri Ambulatory Surgery Center (Hannibal). The surgery center's first total knee replacement procedure took place in November 2010. "We did not experience any challenges in bringing the service line to the center," says Administrator Tracie Hark, CASC. "We are partially owned by an orthopedic group and they were eager to offer our patients the service which allowed them to be in the comfort of their own home by late afternoon. We feel the procedure is a good fit for us because it offers our patients a cost effective alternative to traditional hospital care and it is a profitable service."

The multispecialty ASC opened in 2000. It is a joint venture between Hannibal Clinic and B & B Enterprises. The center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. ASC physicians offer care in a wide array of specialties, including ENT, general surgery, podiatry, orthopedics and urology.

Northern Wyoming Surgical Center (Cody.). Northern Wyoming Surgical Center offers a number of endoscopic and surgical procedures, including total knee replacement procedures. The center is certified by the Wyoming Department of Health and Medicare. It includes a staff of 15 physicians, and it is a member of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association.

NorthStar Surgical Center (Lubbock, Texas). NorthStar Surgical Center provides a wide array of services, including rotator cuff repairs, colonoscopies, lumbar epidural steroid injection, cataract surgery, meniscus repair and total knee replacements. Established in 2001, the center is a physician-owned facility. The center's medical staff includes 35 physicians. In 2012, the center completed 100,000 surgeries.

Presidio Surgery Center (San Francisco). The SCA-affiliated surgery center provides total knee replacement procedures, in addition to care in numerous other specialties such as general surgery, ENT, pain management, vascular surgery, spine surgery and urology. The center was established in 1989, and it is accredited by The Joint Commission, and is also affiliated with Sutter Health's California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

St. Cloud (Minn.) Surgery Center. The surgery center offers both total hip and total knee replacement procedures. It also provides treatments in a wide array of specialties, including oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, podiatry, urology, vascular surgery, ophthalmology and gastroenterology. The facility was founded in 1972 and currently includes 11 operating rooms. It is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and is backed by SCA.

TRIA Orthopedic Center ASC (Bloomington, Minn.). The facility has been performing total knee replacements since 2010, according to ASC Director Mary Haugen. "Total knee replacements are amenable to regional anesthesia for postoperative pain control, have low blood loss, are generally healthy and meet ASC criteria. And case lengths are predictable," she says.

Challenges in bringing the service line to the center included screening candidates for co-morbidities and ensuring patients had strong support at home. "Criteria for admission to an outpatient program must be clear and must be developed with patient safety as an overarching component. Insurers need to be on board for reimbursement," says Ms. Haugen.

The ASC is a part of TRIA Orthopedic Center, which also includes an acute injury clinic and a physical therapy office. Physicians at the center provide treatments for numerous conditions of the elbow, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, knee and shoulder. The surgical suites in the ASC include voice-activated and image-guided technology for easy access to digital images and patient records.

Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center (St. Charles, Ill.). Shawn Palmer, DO, performs total knee replacement procedures at the ASC, in addition to the total hip replacement procedures he recently started performing at the facility.

Valley ASC does one thing — surgery — and we focus on doing that very well," said Deborah Lee Crook, administrator at the center.

Opened in 1987, the surgery center routinely performs more than 750 different types of surgical procedures. More than 165 area surgeons and physicians make up the medical staff of the ASC. They provide care in a number of specialties, including ophthalmology, spine surgery, podiatry, urology and orthopedics.
