5 Philadelphia ASCs

The Liberty Bell, philly cheese steak and the eagles are all hallmarks of Philadelphia. Also, the state is home to some of the finest — and oldest — healthcare institutions in the country, including a number of successful ASCs.

Here are five ASCs that are located in Philadelphia.

PGC Endoscopy Center for Excellence. The ASC currently includes eight physicians, seven of whom are owners, performing 5,000 procedures annually. Opened in 2007, the center was acquired by Physicians Endoscopy in January 2015. It is Medicare-certified, state-licensed and accredited by AAAHC. The center's board-certified physicians focus on gastroenterology.

"We built and grew our endoscopy center from the ground up almost eight years ago. Quality and personalized patient care are key components of our mission," says Mark S. Tanker, DO, medical director of the center.

Jefferson Surgical Center at Jefferson at the Navy Yard. The multispecialty ASC was developed by area physicians, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Nueterra Healthcare. The center features four operating rooms and one procedure room. It offers surgical services in a number of specialties, including anesthesiology, general surgery, orthopedics, pain management and plastic surgery. The center includes 11 physicians.

Red Lion Surgicenter. The surgery center is accredited by the AAAHC and offers dental services for children and adults. More than 1,000 pediatric cases are performed at the center each year. David A. Bresler, DDS, is a co-owner of the center and Joshua A. Bresler, DMD, serves as the medical director.

The Surgery Center of Pennsylvania Hospital. The multispecialty ASC is located on the Tuttleman Center on the Penn Medicine Rittenhouse campus. The surgical team at Pennsylvania Hospital includes physicians in a number of specialties, such as bariatric surgery, cardiac surgery, gastroenterology, plastic surgery and urology.

Wills Eye Surgery Center. The surgery center is a part of the Wills Eye Surgical Network and was opened in 1995. Since then, over 10,000 procedures have been performed at the center. It includes more than 25 physicians offering surgical services in ophthalmology, gastroenterology and oculoplastic surgery. The center encompasses 10,000 square feet and features three operating rooms. It is fully licensed by the state, AAAHC accredited and Medicare-certified.
