WSJ: Pressure mounts for Ryan as House vote on AHCA inches closer

House Speaker Paul Ryan's ability to unite the party around the the American Health Care Act will likely stir questions about his leadership abilities, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The party is struggling to present a united front behind the AHCA Some GOP officials have called for a complete ACA repeal while others voiced concern over the millions of Americans that could lose coverage.

The WSJ reports Ryan, R-Wis., is faced with a conundrum as the law's passage would "vindicate his more-collaborative" style and the law's failure would undermine his authority and show his inability to unite the party.

A GOP spokesperson told WSJ, Ryan and his staff members are working alongside GOP officials and meeting "nearly every week" to get the bill in good shape before the House votes on the bill. To accrue as many votes as possible, Ryan has said he is open to compromise and will adjust the bill to provide more financial assistance to older Americans for coverage.

As the House vote inches closer, WSJ states Ryan's failure to win their favor will be his "most high-profile stumble as speaker and a sign that the fractious House GOP conference is beyond his control."
