Recent data shows burnout is spreading among all medical staff members, from surgeons to office staff, according to Medscape.
Christian D. Helfrich, PhD, of Seattle-based VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and colleagues conducted a study analyzing burnout rates among staff members.
Here are three things to know:
1. Of the polled medical professionals
- Physicians reported the highest burnout rate at 49.25 percent.
- Nurse care managers reported a 41.5 perecnt burnout rate
- Thirty-two percent of clinical associates and 25.7 percent of administrative clerks reported burnout.
2. Various factors influenced the degree of burnout. For instance, 35.2 percent of fully staffed healthcare teams reported burnout, significantly less than 52.3 percent of non-fully staffed teams.
3. The researchers noted, "an important finding from this paper is that, while the overall prevalence of burnout was lower for nurse care managers, clinical associates and administrative clerks relative to primary care physicians, the associations with workload and staffing variables did not differ significantly by occupation," according to Medscape.
