Dr. Asif Mahmood running for California's lieutenant governor — 4 things to know about his political, healthcare views

Pulmonologist Asif Mahmood, MD, recently announced his candidacy for California lieutenant governor, according to Pasadena Star News.

Here are four things to know:

1. Dr. Mahmood immigrated to the United States from Pakistan and plans to run in the 2018 race for the position.

2. Pasadena Star News reports biological information shows Dr. Mahmood was the first student in his Pakistan village to obtain medical school acceptance and he came to the United States nearly 20 years ago.

3. During his announcement at the U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement's Los Angeles office, Dr. Mahmood said, "I'll be a strong voice for all people he [President Donald Trump] is trying to silence. Let's get tough on the right things — on hate, division, poverty and poor healthcare."

4. Dr. Mahmood advocates for a single-payer healthcare systems and free community college.
