5 things to know about Dr. Richard Besser; Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's new president, CEO

Princeton, N.J.-based Robert Wood Johnson Foundation named Richard Besser, MD, its next president and CEO.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Besser.

1. He is succeeding Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, who led the foundation for the last 14 years.

2. Dr. Besser is the CDC's former acting director. At the CDC, Dr. Besser directed the Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response. He was responsible for the agency's public health emergency preparedness campaign.

3. He is also a past acting director for the CDC. He led the center's response to the H1N1 influenza pandemic.

4. Dr. Besser also was the pediatric residency director at UC San Diego for five years. He led research on controlling pediatric tuberculosis.

5. Dr. Besser began his career after earning his medical degree from Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania. He completed his pediatrics residency at Baltimore-based John Hopkins University.
