Premiums in New Risk Pools for People with Preexisting Conditions Can be High
An HHS official said people with preexisting conditions who cannot buy commercial insurance could pay as much as $900 a month in premiums for new high-risk insurance pools set up in each state under the healthcare reform law, according to a report by the Albuquerque Journal.
Estimates on the HHS website, HealthCare.gov show premiums for a 50-year-old are $552-$675 a month in Florida, $400-$600 in New York and $491-$600 in Texas.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that as many as 700,000 will enroll in the state-based risk pools, which are being subsidized by the federal government.
While 29 states and Washington, D.C., administer their own risk pools, the federal government will run the risk pools in the other 21 states.
