Berwick to Become CMS Administrator Without Senate Confirmation
President Obama said he intends to use the current Congressional recess to appoint Donald Berwick, MD, as administrator of CMS without confirmation by the Senate, according to a report by Forbes.
Senate hearings on Dr. Berwick, currently president of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, were expected to get nasty, with Republican senators focusing on Dr. Berwick's previous comments endorsing healthcare rationing and the government-run healthcare system in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Berwick has not explained those comments, citing the upcoming hearings, but he enjoys a wide consensus of support across the healthcare community.
