UCLA Surgeons Combine Endoscopy, Laparoscopy in Minimally Invasive Polyp Removal Procedure

Surgeons and gastroenterologists at the University of California Los Angeles have been performing CELS, a new minimally invasive procedure, to remove large and difficult to reach polyps in the colon, according to a News Medical report.
Combination endoscopy laparoscopy surgery is designed to be a minimally invasive option for patients that would otherwise undergo surgery to remove a portion of the colon, regardless of whether or not polyps are cancerous.

The procedure begins like a routine colonoscopy, but gastroenterologist can remove polyps through small incisions in the patient's abdomen. The polyp is immediately analyzed. If it is cancerous, the affected portion of the colon is removed.
