A new study published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology has found an association between inflammatory bowel disease in women and increased risk of cervical dysplasia and cancer.
"Our research shows that patients with IBD, specifically Crohn’s disease, are at increased risk for developing cervical cancer, even when undergoing the recommended screening," said study author Professor Tine Jess, MD, from Statens Serum Institut in Denmark. "These findings provide an important reminder for IBD patients, and their physicians, to follow the recommended screening guidelines for cervical cancer."
The study authors found both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease patients had an increased risk of cervical cancer diagnosis before IBD, but only Crohn's disease patients had an increased risk of developing cervical cancer after the IBD diagnosis.
