Retired gastroenterologist Dr. Lionel Bernstein holding art gallery show: 4 insights

Former gastroenterologist Lionel Bernstein, MD, has created art for the last three decades, and on March 25, 2017, he's going to have his first exhibit, DCist reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Dr. Bernstein had a long career working for the Veterans Administration and the Bethesda, Md.-based National Institute of Health.

2. He started making art in 1970. His first piece was a sculpture echoing Henry Moore's Upright Motive No. 2. He told DCist inspiration struck after a trip to London with his wife. He told his wife, "when I get home I'm going to have to make one of these, because I'm never going to make enough to buy one."

3. Dr. Bernstein carved the six-foot tall sculpture using a chainsaw after becoming frustrated with smaller sculpting methods.

4. Several people asked Dr. Bernstein to show his art through the years, and after several decades, he is holding his first art exhibit at 410 GooDBuddy in Washington, D.C.
