Microcameras May Lead to Disposable Endoscopes
The development of new microcameras may lead to disposable endoscopes, according to a news release from Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) in Berlin, Germany, which has developed the devices with Awaiba GmbH.
The low cost of producing the microcamera could allow physicians to dispose of endoscopes after one use, said IZM scientist Martin Wilke.
Unlike previous digital cameras, the entire new microcamera — one cubic millimeter — can fit on the tip of an endoscope, allowing for high quality images with thin endoscopes.
