The Joint Commission awarded its first ever gold seal of approval for Methodist Dallas Medical Center's pancreatric program.

Here's what you should know.

1. The Joint Commission previously recognized the medical system for its pancreatic surgery and cancer programs. It was the first in the nation to receive the recognition for pancreatic surgery.

2. The Joint Commission's Executive Director of Certification Programs Wendi Roberts, RN, called Methodist Dallas a leader in pancreatic care.

3. The Joint Commission evaluated the medical center on its continuum of care across three key areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards, use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and use of an organized approach to consistently improve.

4. Martin Koonsman, MD, attributed the program's success to its physicians and their high level of medical skills.
