Major laparoscopic colorectal resections can be performed in elderly patients with low mortality risk

A new study has found that major colorectal resections can be performed laparoscopically in patients older than 80 years of age with a low mortality rates.

The study was presented at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons 2015 Annual Meeting.

Researchers examined 179 patients over the age of 80 who underwent laparoscopic colorectal resection. The study found that morbidity rate for the patients was 29 percent, with 12.8 percent being classified as a major morbidity. Overall, 30-day and one-year mortality was 0.6 percent and 9.8 percent, respectively. Mortality was surgery-related in 38 percent of patients, cancer-related in 31 percent and unrelated to surgery in 31 percent of cases.
