GI physician leader to know: Dr. Sheila Crowe of UC San Diego School of Medicine

Sheila E. Crowe, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist, clinical professor of medicine and director of research in the gastroenterology division at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology and American Gastroenterological Association, for which she recently served as councillor-at-large on the governing board.

Dr. Crowe focuses on adenoma polyp detection, celiac disease, colonoscopy, EGD and H. pylori infection. Her research interests include understanding the immune-epithelial interactions involved in gastrointestinal diseases. She has received ongoing funding from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for her work studying the role of oxidative stress in gastric epithelial injury related to H. pylori infections.

 

Dr. Crowe has won numerous awards over the course of her career, including the AGA's Distinguished Educator Award. She also recently served as editor of AGA Perspectives, and she has been a member of editorial boards for numerous publications, including Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Additionally, she serves on the medical advisory boards for a number of organizations, including the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness.

 

Dr. Crowe earned her medical degree at McMaster University School of Medicine in Ontario, Canada, where she also completed her residency and a gastroenterology fellowship.
