GI physician leader to know: Dr. Michael Kochman of Penn Medicine

Michael L. Kochman, MD, is the Wilmott Family Professor of Medicine, professor of surgery and vice chair of clinical affairs in the department of medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, both in Philadelphia. He is also the director of advanced endoscopic training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and co-director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Evaluation Center at Abramson Cancer Center.

Dr. Kochman is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American College of Physicians and American Gastroenterological Association, where he serves as AGA Institute Leadership Cabinet chair. He is also a member of the Philadelphia GI Training Group and Council of Science Editors. He received the Penn Medicine Award of Excellence in 2006.

Dr. Kochman has a professional interest in biliary disease, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, interventional endoscopy and pancreatic cancer. He has an active interest in research and his work has been published in a number of prestigious journals, such as Gastroenterolgy, Surgical Endoscopy and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr. Kochman completed his medical degree at the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago. He completed his residency at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago and completed his fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Clinics in Ann Arbor. Additionally, he has completed fellowship training in endoscopic ultrasound at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis.
