GI physician leader to know: Dr. John Vargo of Cleveland Clinic

John Vargo, MD, MPH, is the department chair of gastroenterology and hepatology at Cleveland Clinic as well as vice chairman of Cleveland Clinic's Digestive Disease Institute and president of the Cleveland Clinic medical staff. He is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Gastroenterological Association and American College of Gastroenterology. He is also an honorary fellow of the Gastroenterology Society of Ecuador.

Dr. Vargo focuses on biliary tract disease, capsule endoscopy, deep enteroscopy and interventional endoscopy, double balloon enteroscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography, endoscopic cancer therapy and pancreatic disorders. He also has patents for use of capnography and use of computer-assisted propofol sedation for patient monitoring during gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Dr. Vargo has won a number of awards over the course of his career, including the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Career Development Award in 2003 and the United States Navy Commendation Medal.

Dr. Vargo earned his medical degree at University of Rochester (N.Y.) School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed his residency at Montefiore Hospital/University Health Center of Pittsburgh. He completed his fellowship at Cleveland Clinic.
