GI physician leader to know: Dr. John Allen of Yale Medical Group

John I. Allen, MD, is the clinical chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at Yale Medical Group and professor at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn. He previously served as quality advisor for Minneapolis-based Minnesota Gastroenterology and quality chair at Minneapolis-based Allina Health System. He is also president of the American Gastroenterological Association.

Dr. Allen was selected to chair the Clinical Practice and Quality Management Committee of the American Gastroenterological Association in 2007. He has also chaired or co-chaired task forces that developed many of the gastroenterology measures currently in CMS' Physician Quality Reporting System.

Dr. Allen has a professional interest in colon cancer prevention, general gastroenterology, inflammatory bowel disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease. He has more than 90 published articles and book chapters on topics such as basic molecular biology and practice management. Additionally, in 2012, he received the Distinguished Clinician Award from the American Gastroenterological Association.

Dr. Allen earned his medical degree at University of New Mexico Medical School in Albuquerque, and completed his residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis.
