GI physician leader to know: Dr. Hashem El-Serag of Baylor College of Medicine

Hashem El-Serag, MD, MPH, is a professor of medicine and chief of the gastroenterology and hepatology section at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He holds a number of leadership positions, including the GI section chief at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston; director of Texas Medical Center Digestive Diseases Center in Houston; and program leader of the Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences Program at the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center, also in Houston.

Dr. El-Serag has won numerous awards over the course of her career, including The American College of Gastroenterology Research Award in 2006 and the Blue Faery Award for Excellence in Liver Cancer Research in 2011. He has been awarded more than 40 grants and published more than 230 journal papers. He also serves as the editor-in-chief of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr. El-Serag has a wide array of clinical interests, including Barrett's esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome and celiac disease. His research interests include screening and surveillance of GI and liver cancers as well as epidemiology and outcomes of digestive disorders.

Dr. El-Serag earned his medical degree at Al-Arab Medical University in Benghazi, Libya. He completed his residency at Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital/Yale University and completed his fellowship as well as a master's degree in public health at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
