GI physician leader to know: Dr. Ashwin Ananthakrishnan of Massachusetts General Hospital

Ashwin Ananthakrishnan, MBBS, is a gastroenterologist providing care at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He also provides care at the Mass General/North Shore Center for Outpatient Care in Danvers. He is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Dr. Ananthakrishnan's clinical interests include Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and general gastroenterology. He is actively involved in research and his current research projects include a prospective study of depressive symptoms and risk of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and an examination of dietary factors, in particular dietary fat and fiber, on the risk of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

In 2011, Dr. Ananthakrishnan won an American Gastroenterological Association research scholar award. Additionally, he is interested in the epidemiology and outcomes of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, and aims to understand the risk factors. His work has been published in Gastroenterology and Gut.

Dr. Ananthakrishnan earned his medical degree at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research in India and completed his residency as well as fellowship training at Medical College of Wisconsin.
