GI physician leader to know: Dr. Andres Gelrud of University of Chicago Medicine

Andres Gelrud, MD, MMSc, is a clinical pancreatologist and an associate professor of medicine at The University of Chicago Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association and American Pancreas Association.

Dr. Gelrud has a professional interest in acute and chronic pancreatitis, interventional endoscopy, pancreatic cancer, pancreatic diseases and genetic conditions of the pancreas. He has expertise in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, transgastric pancreatic necrosectomy and stent placement of the gastrointestinal tract.

Dr. Gelrud has written more than 75 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals. He has served as the primary site investigator on several studies that examine why patients develop pancreatitis. He also currently serves on the board of directors of the National Pancreas Foundation.

Dr. Gelrud earned his medical degree at Universidad Central de Venezuela and completed his residency at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston. He has completed two fellowships — one in gastroenterology, pancreatology and interventional endoscopy at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School in Boston and another in interventional endoscopy and pancreatology at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School, also in Boston.
