Dr. Stephen Hanauer elected ACG president: 5 things to know

Stephen Hanauer, MD, FACG, has been elected the 2014 to 2015 president of the American College of Gastroenterology. Here are five things to know about Dr. Hanauer.

1. Dr. Hanauer officially assumed the presidential position at the ACG annual scientific meeting held in Philadelphia. The ACG represents more than 13,000 clinical gastroenterologists and other specialists in digestive disease.

2. He has been a member of the ACG Board of Trustees since 2006 and has served as an officer of the organization since 2010. Dr. Hanauer has edited Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology and served as chair of the ACG finance committee from 2011 to 2012.

3. Dr. Hanauer has also held leadership positions with the American Gastroenterological Association including chair of the Sections on Infection, Immunology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease and member of the AGA Governing Board as counselor for clinical research.

4. He earned his medical degree at University of Illinois and completed his internship, residency and fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. Hanauer served as chief of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition as the University of Chicago Medical Center from 2000 to 2013. He also served as director the Logan Center for Gastrointestinal Clinical Research.

5. In 2014, Dr. Hanauer assumed the role of Clifford Joseph Barborka Professor of Medicine at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Digestive Health Center at Northwestern Medicine, both in Chicago.
