Richard L. Smith, MD, will soon retire from Asheville (N.C.) Gastroenterology Associates, according to a Citizen-Times report.

Here are five key notes:

1. Dr. Smith joined Asheville Gastroenterology Associates in 1978.

2. He was one of the first few physicians in North Carolina to remove stones from the bile duct using newly-developed endoscopic techniques.

3. His practice was focused on the endoscopic management of pancreatic and biliary diseases.

4. Dr. Smith is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and North Carolina Medical Society.

5. Dr. Smith completed his residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
