Coffee may serve as protective agent against colorectal cancer: 5 takeaways

A study in Cancer Epidemiology Biomakers & Prevention found that regularly consuming coffee decreases risk of colorectal cancer, Hometown Focus reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Coffee features several components that can affect the "physiology of the colon," making it less likely for cancerous roots to establish themselves.

2. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute substantiates the claims.

3. Several case-controlled studies have shown the correlation between the two claims.

4. Coffee may also boost the survival rate from colon cancer as well. A study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology shows that colon cancer patients who are heavy coffee drinkers lower their risk of dying or having the cancer return.

5. More research is needed before physicians can start recommending coffee as a preventative measure.
