China behind in colorectal cancer screening — 60% of patients diagnosed in mid to terminal stages: 3 things to know

Medical experts said China is lagging behind in colorectal screening rates, diagnosing the disease 60 percent of the time when it's already in mid to terminal stages, Shanghai Daily reports.

Here's what you need to know.

1. In China, the five-year survival rate is only 31 percent compared to the 67 percent the U.S. touts. In the U.S. the mortality and incidence rate drops by 3 percent annually since 2001 because of several awareness campaigns.

2. Colorectal cancer is the fifth deadliest cancer in China and expected to worsen as the country's population ages.

3. Projections predict 480,000 new cases of colorectal cancer in China every year until 2035.
