Balloon colonoscope improves polyp detection

A balloon colonoscope improves polyp and adenoma detection rate when compared to standard colonoscopy, according to a Medscape report.

Seth Gross, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at New York University Langone Medical Center, presented on the advantages of balloon technology in colonoscopy at the American College of Gastroenterology 2013 Annual Scientific Meeting and Postgraduate Course.

Traditional colonoscopy can miss up to 28 percent of polyps and 12 percent to 24 percent of adenomas, according to the report. Balloon colonoscopes can be inflated, which allows smoothing of the colon surface and improved visibility.
