Accountable care organizations have been met with mixed reviews, but regardless of perception alternative patient care and payment models are gaining traction. Is gastroenterologist participation in ACOs on the rise?

Here are eight statistics on gastroenterologist participation in ACOs and alternative models in 2011 compared to 2012, according to Medscape's Gastroenterologist Compensation Report: 2012 Results and Gastroenterologist Compensation Report: 2013.

2011 Participation

•    Planning to join an ACO: 9 percent
•    ACO: 2 percent
•    Cash-only: 1 percent
•    Concierge practice: 1 percent

2012 Participation

•    ACO: 17 percent
•    Planning to join an ACO: 9 percent
•    Cash-only: 4 percent
•    Concierge practice: 3 percent
