26 gastroenterologists making headlines – March 10, 2015

Here are 26 gastroenterologists who were featured in the news for leadership moves or industry honors within the past month.

John I. Allen, MD, MBA, AGAF, president of the American Gastroenterological Association Institute, travelled to Capitol Hill to discuss some of the most pressing issues in gastroenterology.

The American Gastroenterological Association named its inaugural class of the Future Leaders Program.

The class members include:

•    Neelendu Dey, MD, instructor of medicine, division of gastroenterology, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis
•    Nelson Garcia, Jr., MD, associate gastroenterologist, GastroHealth in Miami
•    Avlin B. Imaeda, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine, section of digestive diseases, Yale University School of Medicine in Guilford, Conn.  
•    Gilaad G. Kaplan, MD, assistant professor, University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada
•    Sonia S. Kupfer, MD, assistant professor of medicine, University of Chicago Medicine
•    Benjamin Lebwohl, MD, instructor in clinical medicine, New York Presbyterian Hospital
•    David J. Levinthal, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center
•    Kara Gross Margolis, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics, Columbia University in New York
•    Silvio de Melo, Jr., MD, director of endoscopy; program director GI fellowship, University of Florida College of Medicine Jacksonville

•    Savita Srivastava, MD, gastroenterologist, University of Virginia Physician's Group in Culpeper
•    Tram T. Tran, MD, medical director, liver transplantation, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Pacific Palisades, Calif.  
•    Elizabeth C Verna, MD, MS, associate program director, New York Presbyterian Hospital

Kenneth Cox, MD, is retiring from the CMO position at Palo Alto, Calif.-based Stanford Children's Health and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. However, Dr. Cox will continue to serve the organization as chief of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition; and medical director of the pediatric liver transplant program.

Gastroenterologist Heidi Huck, MD, joined the medical team at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health System, based in Mattoon. Ill.

Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York named gastroenterologist Ira Jacobson, MD, chairman of the department of medicine.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant named four members to the State Institutions of Higher Learning board of trustees. One of the four appointees is Alfred McNair Jr., MD, owner of Digestive Health Center in Ocean Springs, Miss.

Gastroenterologist Amar S. Naik, MD, joined Loyola University Health System, based in Maywood, Ill.

Michael Nathanson, MD, PhD, was named the Gladys Phillips Crofoot Professor of Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn.

Gastroenterologist Vinay Sood, DO, joined the medical team at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
