Here are 12 recent gastroenterologist appointments and accomplishments.

Professional Appointments

Peter Ojuro, DO, has joined the gastroenterology department of Altru Health System in Grand Forks, N.D. He specializes in screening colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, ERCP and esophageal manometry and has a special interest in functional gastrointestinal disorders and GERD.

Froedtert Health Menomonee Falls (Wis.) Clinic has announced the addition of Cris Canga, MD, to its medical staff. Dr. Canga will start seeing patients in June.

Via Surgical, an Israel-based developer of hernia mesh fixation technologies, has announced the appointment of David Earle, MD, as a medical advisor. Dr. Earle is a director of minimally invasive surgery at Baystate Medical Center Springfield (Mass).

Moiz Karu, MD, who specializes in gastroenterology and internal medicine, will be moving his New Jersey practice from Middlesex into a new medical building in Dunellen. Dr. Karu recently bought and renovated the building, turning it into offices for his practice, a wellness center he owns and Somerset Medical Center.

Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., has announced pediatric gastroenterologist Laurie Conklin, MD, has been appointed to the faculty of the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. Her clinical interests are focused on better ways to detect and manage depression and anxiety in children with inflammatory bowel disease.

University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile has appointed pediatric gastroenterologist David Gremse, MD, professor and chair of pediatrics. Dr. Gremse previously served as professor and chair of pediatrics at the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas.

Magdalena Averhoff, MD, associate chief medical officer of Jackson South Community Hospital in Miami, has been appointed to the Florida Board of Medicine by Gov. Rick Scott. Dr. Averhoff was previously in private practice in Miami for 23 years, focusing on clinical and endoscopic gastroenterology.

Southcoast Health System, based in Wareham, Mass., has announced that Kevin Murphy, MD, has joined Southcoast Physicians Group and will serve as the medical director of Southcoast Gastroenterology Services. Southcoast Health System at Rosebrook is a full-service medical practice featuring around 20 primary care and specialty physicians.

Professional Accomplishments

Robert Lowe, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine and educational director of the section of gastroenterology at Boston Medical Center, will receive a Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of the University's highest teaching honors.

John Gray, MD, has received the 2012 Community Service Award from the Nevada State Medical Association. The award is presented to a physician who has performed outstanding community service work above and beyond the call of professional duty.

Shekhar Challa, MD, has written a new book titled "Probiotics for Dummies." It is the third book for Dr. Challa, a board-certified gastroenterologist who serves as president and is the co-founder of Kansas Medical Group, which has locations in Topeka, Lawrence and Shawnee.

Navin Kumar, MD, has received a "doctor of the year" award from nurses at one of the campuses of Indiana's Franciscan St. Margaret Health. The annual award recognizes excellence in service to patients and staff.
