12 gastroenterologists serving as ASC medical directors

Gastroenterology is one of the highest volume ambulatory surgery center specialties. Here are 12 gastroenterologists who serve as medical directors of ASCs.

Fernando Bermudez, MD, FACP, FACG, is the medical director and a board member of Eastside Endoscopy Center in St. Clair Shores, Mich. He also serves as a physician financial executive of GI Medicine Associates in St. Clair Shores. He completed his fellowship training at Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago. He is a former division head of gastroenterology at St. John Hospital in Detroit.

Brett Bernstein, MD, is the medical director of Eastside Endoscopy in Manhattan, N.Y. He is also Chief Quality Officer of Beth Israel Ambulatory Endoscopy Services and director of endoscopy at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York.  He is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Quality Assurance Committee. Dr. Bernstein is an assistant professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

Mark Edelstein, MD, is the medical director of Robertson Surgical Center in Beverly Hills, Calif. He founded Beverly Hills Gastroenterology in 2003. He serves as a clinical instructor at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine in Los Angeles. Dr. Edelstein also serves as vice president and a board member of the Young Physicians Organization.

Blair Lewis, MD, FACP, FACG, FASGE, is the founder and medical director of Carnegie Hill Endoscopy in New York. He also serves as clinical professor of medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Dr. Lewis has held several leadership positions in the GI field including president of the New York Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the New York Academy of Gastroenterology. He also sat on the American College of Gastroenterology Board of Governors for six years.

John P. McLaughlin, DO, FACG, FACP, founded Harrisburg (Pa.) Gastroenterology in 1978. He is the medical director and co-owner of Harrisburg Endoscopy & Surgery Center.  Dr. McLaughlin also serves as chief of gastroenterology at Pinnacle Health Hospitals, based in Harrisburg, Pa. He completed his fellowship training at Cleveland Clinic.  

Arvind Movva, MD, is the CEO of Gastroenterology Consultants and a physician with Heartland Clinic, both in Moline, Ill. Dr. Movva is also the assistant medical director of Gastroenterology Consultants, Regional Surgicenter, Midwest Clinical Research Associates and Valley View Anesthesia. He completed his gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

David Robbins, MD, MSc, is the medical director of Manhattan Endoscopy in New York. He also serves as an attending physician and program director of the GI fellowship program at Lenox Hill Hospital, also in New York. Additionally, he is an assistant professor of medicine at the New York University School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship training at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Robbins is an active member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and in 2010 he served as the ASGE Ambassador to Cairo, Egypt.

Nayan Shah, MD, is the medical director of Enyon (Pa.) Surgery Center. Dr. Shah began practicing in 1986 and since has performed more than 37,000 endoscopic procedures. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship training at Albany (N.Y.) Medical College.

Leonard Stein, MD, is the medical director of the Long Island Center for Digestive Health in Garden City, N.Y. He is also a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Stein is also affiliated with Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, N.Y. He completed his fellowship training at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

James Taterka, MD, is the medical director of Springfield Ambulatory Surgery Center in Flourtown, Pa. Dr. Taterka has a special interest in colon cancer screening, liver and biliary diseases and therapeutic endoscopy. He completed his fellowship training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Scott M. Tenner, MD, MPH, is the director of the Greater New York Endoscopy Surgical Center and Brooklyn Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. Dr. Tenner is also a clinical professor of medicine at the State University of New York Health Sciences Center. He is a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy's Health and Public Policy Committee. He is a past president of the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and former chief of gastroenterology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Michele Woodley, MD, is the GI medical director of St. Louis Women's Surgery Center in Ballwin, Mo. As one of the few female GI physicians in the area, she is a leader in advancing the treatment of women's health issues across St. Louis and its surrounding communities.
