When Chris Van Gorder became CEO of San Diego-based Scripps Health in 2000, the health system was losing $21 million annually. By 2008, the system had an operating margin of $109 million. The key to the system's turnaround was creating relationships and alignment among the system's administration and its physicians, according to Mr. Van Gorder.
