Commercial payors are responsible for more than half of reimbursement paid to ASCs, followed by Medicare. Here is a breakdown of payor types, according to VMG Health's 2008 Intellimarker.

1. Commercial payors -- 54.0 percent
2. Medicare -- 30.9 percent
3. Workers' compensation -- 5.8 percent
4. Medicaid -- 3.5 percent
5. Self-pay -- 3.0 percent
6. Other federal payors -- 2.5 percent
7. Charity care -- 0.3 percent
