Current healthcare reform efforts would expand coverage to millions of Americans while substantially increasing costs. The most recent bill is likely to go up for a vote on Sunday. This healthcare reform bill may be best be viewed, whether Democratic or Republican, as a very incomplete or intermediate effort. In Massachusetts, the true costs became clear a few years into their reform program. This effort at healthcare reform, as it has in Massachusetts, may lead to much larger long-term changes to the healthcare and tax system. These will need to be addressed as the costs of this program add up over time.
