There are nine keys to optimizing revenue cycle, according to a survey of "gold-standard performers" conducted by LarsonAllen, a nationally recognized CPA, consulting and advisory firm based in Minneapolis, and Gateway EDI, a St. Louis-based national clearinghouse. The firms extensively reviewed medical billing practices of 40,000 physician clients nationwide, from which they determined 23 top-performing medical practices. Here is the average 2007 Medicare sub charge (submitted charges divided by allowed services), average allow charge (Medicare-allowed charges divided by allowed services, including co-pays and deductibles paid by patient), and average payment (Medicare payments divided by allowed services, not including co-pays and deductibles paid by patient) for four spine/pain management procedures commonly performed in ASCs.
