The Alabama
Certificate of Need Review Board will not reconsider a proposal for a new
surgery center, unanimously rejecting a request from the center to revisit the
proposal after originally rejecting its CON request, according to the AlabamaPress-Register.
Device-intensive procedures are core procedures for hospitals in terms of the revenue per procedure they represent and the high margins they can offer, especially from private insurers. However, it is essential that hospitals overcome challenges in cost management, revenues and pricing and physician relationships in order to ensure the profitability of these procedures, which also provide opportunities for hospitals to brand themselves as "high-tech and high-touch," over the long term, according "Pursuing Value for Medical Devices, Hospitals and Manufacturers."
Tygris Commercial Finance Group, a recently formed commercial finance company, has completed its acquisition of substantially all of the assets and business of MarCap, a Chicago-based middle market healthcare equipment finance company. MarCap joins Tygris Asset Finance, Tygris's middle market equipment leasing and asset finance business led by Laird Boulden, and will continue to operate under the MarCap brand.

House Version of Appropriations Bill Does Not Include Physician-Ownership Prohibition

It has been confirmed by several sources within the House of Representatives that, late last night the House version of the Supplemental Appropriations Bill was finalized with the Bush Administration, according to Physician Hospitals of America.

The federal government is on an "unsustainable long-term fiscal path" when it comes to dealing with sharply rising healthcare costs, according to Gene L. Dodaro, Acting Comptroller General of the United States, today in testimony before the Senate finance committee. Further, the "state and local governments ? absent policy changes ? will also face large and growing fiscal challenges beginning within the next few years."
The AMA has issued its first report card on health insurers
with a focus on determining the timeliness, transparency and accuracy of claims
processing by payors.
Joint Commission Suspends Medical Staff Standard Implementation Date

The Joint Commission's board of commissioners approved the continued engagement of its implementation task force on the revision of medical staff standard MS.1.20. The Board also suspended the planned July 2009 implementation date for the current revised standard.
