Kathy Bryant. Kathy Bryant is the president of the ASC Association and leads the activities of the nation's largest ASC membership association. Ms. Bryant also serves as president of the Ambulatory Surgery Foundation. Ms. Bryant oversaw the development and implementation of the first ASC-specific credential, the Certified Administrator Surgery Center (CASC). Between 1998 and 2007, before accepting her current position with the ASC Association, Ms. Bryant led FASA, one of the two organizations that came together to form the ASC Association in 2008.

Of the 5,000 ASCs in the United States, about 90 percent are physician-owned and -operated, according to ASC Association. Less than 3 percent of ASCs are owned and operated with a hospital as the general partner, and about 14 percent also have a corporate partner. However, there is a growing trend in the United States for hospitals to combine their efforts and talents to develop joint-ventures with physicians and corporate partners. This article is a case study of two such joint-ventures, the Surgery Center of Reno and Knightsbridge Surgery Center. |

Modifiers (usually 2-digits) are added to the main procedure code to signify that the procedure has been altered by a distinct factor. Modifiers are accepted by most payors. Modifiers can increase or decrease reimbursement. They can also cause claims not to pay properly or deny if used incorrectly or not used, when necessary. Some modifiers are for use by ASCs only, some for physician practices and some are for use by both provider types. Correct modifier usage is under close review by Medicare at the present time.

Study Shows Efficacy of Computer Assisted Sedation System; Feasibility Study Published in GI Journal |

A pivotal trial in which physician/nurse teams used the SEDASYS System indicates reduced risk of over-sedation with propofol in patients undergoing colonoscopy and EGD. The study included 1,000 subjects who underwent sedation for colonoscopy and EGD at eight sites and compared the SEDASYS System to the current standard of care for sedation (midazolam plus fentanyl or meperidine). Further, the results of a feasibility study have been accepted by and published in the September issue of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. |

FDA Issues Warning About Unapproved Ophthalmic Balanced Salt Solution Drug Products |

It appears that the FDA is requiring certain manufacturers of balanced salt solutions (BSS) to cease and desist from manufacturing these products on or before November 24, 2008. You can read the FDA release here. If you use these products, the only “approved” manufacturers, as of this article (published Oct. 1, 2008), are Alcon and Akorn.
