Webinar Discusses EHR and Meaningful Use in ASCs

A recent webinar discussed how the upcoming meaningful use requirements apply to and will impact ambulatory surgery centers, as well as eligible hospital and professionals, as they relate to electronic medical records. The webinar was held by SourceMedical and featured Patrick Doyle, vice president of sales, Jessica McBrayer, RN, business analyst, and Ron Pelletier, vice president of market strategy at SourceMedical.

The webinar was held to address the goals of meaningful use and clarify questions from attendees about the regulations and their impact.

Hospitals and EPs are the only groups eligible to receive incentive payment for meeting meaningful use requirements at this time. However, surgeons performing cases at ASCs with certified EHR will be able to count those cases toward qualifying for incentive payments.

The goals of meaningful use include the following:
•    Improve quality, safety, efficiency and reduce health disparities
•    Engage patients and families
•    Improve care coordination
•    Ensure adequate privacy and security protections
•    Improve population and public health

Ms. McBrayer discussed the requirements for each of the four stages of meaningful use and the important dates over the next year for hospitals and EPs to complete registrations for 2011 incentive payments. The major pushback against the requirements is that the timeline for implementation is too aggressive, according to some industry members.

A lengthy question and answer session followed the presentation. Some of the questions addressed during that time include:
•    What can ASCs do to register for meaningful use in order for their EPs to count their ASC cases?
•    Is there a meaningful use standard for today?
•    Why should an ASC update its systems to include certified EHR now if it doesn't have to?
•    Can an ASC implement an inpatient EHR without using all the functionalities?
