The daily grind: 10 tips to handle stress

Is work making it hard to sleep at night? Are you worrying constantly about your job? The following are 10 tips for managing stress levels, adapted from Forbes.

1. Say "no." Don't be afraid to say it, especially when you mean it. Saying no gives you the chance to devote more attention to existing commitments rather than spreading yourself too thin.

2. Appreciate the little things. Gratitude as an emotion reduces stress hormones and leads to greater feelings of well-being.

3. Stay in the now. "What if" can lead to unproductive, stressful thoughts about unlikely possibilities. Only ask this question if you really must have a contingency plan.

4. Get off the grid. Taking regular time off and limiting your electronics exposure can help you relax and recharge.

5. Limit caffeine. Caffeine releases adrenaline in the body and takes a while to work its way out of the body. That cup of coffee can lead to avoidable stress!

6. Get enough sleep. This is when your brain "recharges." Getting enough sleep is vital to keeping a clear head.

7. Exercise. Not only is it good for your physical health, but the cascade of hormones released when exercising is good for your emotional health as well.

8. Forgive. Holding a grudge can be tempting, but this type of behavior can lead to negative, stress-inducing emotions.

9. Avoid unchecked emotion. Not only can it damage relationships, but it is far more stressful to manage conflicts when there is a measure of emotional intelligence.

10. Believe in yourself. Negative self-talk can be devastating for confidence and is often counterfactual.
