Solid work environment yields higher safety, better outcomes: 5 insights

A efficient work environment correlates with improved nurse performance, patient experience and outcomes, based on a Press Ganey analysis, according to HealthLeaders Media.

Press Ganey reviewed data from its surveys, the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators and the CMS Hospital Compare website.

Here are five insights:

1. The analysis revealed hospitals in the "top quartile of perceived nursing workplace safety" possessed a 52 percent lower rate of "nurse-perceived missed care," when compared to hospitals in the bottom quartile.

2. Those hospitals in the top quartile had a 27 percent higher nurse job enjoyment rate.

3. The top-ranked hospitals also held a 22 percent higher CMS Overall Hospital Quality star rating compared to the lowest-ranked hospitals.

4. Press Ganey found the top hospitals possessed a 3 percent higher rate of average "likelihood to recommend" scores.

5. The data also revealed work environment impacts nurse surveillance ability. The top-ranked hospitals in "perceived nursing capacity" had 26 percent fewer hospital-acquired pressure ulcers, compared to the bottom quartile of hospitals.
