Smith & Nephew acquired software technology company S2 Interactive to improve savings for Syncera customers.
Here are five things to know about the acquisition:
1. Smith & Nephew's Syncera is focused on providing an orthopedic supply chain model for hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. With the acquisition, S2 Interactive's technology applications Virtual Backtable and TrayTouch allow providers to access, analyze and manage real-time instrument utilization data during surgery.
2. Operating room administrators can use the data to identify instruments each surgeon uses during specific procedures and then prepare and streamline instrument trays.
3. The technology is also handy for training OR staff using interactive, virtual layouts of each tray, potentially reducing training time by 40 percent.
4. The system is designed to reduce costs associated with instrument prep and assembly.
5. The terms of the transaction weren't disclosed.
"As operating rooms continue to look for ways to improve efficiency and trim costs, better instrument management becomes vital," said Stuart Morris-Hipkins, senior vice president and general manager of Syncera. "By organizing the instrument trays and the OR equipment based on the surgical sequence and instrument usage of each surgeon, a hospital can significantly reduce the overall costs associated with instrument prep and assembly without sacrificing patient care."
