Senator Rand Paul on medical mission in Guatemala

Senator Rand Paul, MD, is currently on a medical mission removing cataracts in Guatemala, according to a report from WHAS11.

The Republican senator from Kentucky, who practiced as an ophthalmologist and operated a medical practice in Bowling Green, Ky., until his election to Congress in 2010, frequently performs free surgeries, according to the report.

This time, Sen. Paul is on the mission with physicians from the University of Utah's Moran Eye Clinic. The particular mission, the Baja Verapaz region mission, is a five-year partnership among the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Foundation, Moran Eye Center, The Hope Alliance, Alcon and Lions Club International.

The trip comes after Sen. Paul performed charity cataract surgeries at the Dupont Surgery Center in Louisville, Ky., early last week, according to the report.
